February 8, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The debt-laden recording industry megalabel EMI is looking to slash its workforce in order to attract more than 120 million GBP in capital, according to EMI CEO Elio Leoni-Sceti.

Those cuts could include up to 3,500 job loses and the dissolution of contracts with loss-generating artists. The Mail Online reports that without the 120 million GBP in fresh capital, Citigroup would foreclose on a loan to investment group Terra Firma and take control of the company.

EMI’s auditor, KPMG, has expressed significant doubt about EMI’s ability to move forward.

Gay Marriage Debate Boils Over in Mexico

February 8th, 2010

February 8, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ On March 4, a law goes into effect in Mexico City that allows same-sex couples to marry and adopt children. Mexican President Felipe Calderon and other detractors of the law are scrambling for ways to stop it from taking effect.

Calderon said the country’s Constitution defines marriage as between a man and a woman, but legal experts disagree with his interpretation. His administration is challenging the law in court, pointing to a constitutional clause protecting family. Meanwhile, Roman Catholic groups are standing strongly behind the conservative federal government.

Can Cold Pasteurization Increase Food Safety, Prolong Preservation?

February 8th, 2010

February 8, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ One company is taking a new approach to food pasteurization. ScanTech Sciences Inc. has developed a way to treat foods via “cold” electronic pasteurization.

An article in the South Florida Business Journal says ScanTech uses an electron beam and X-Ray tech to send a current through fruits, vegetables and meats to prevent food-borne illness and insect infestation. A side-benefit of this treatment is that it yields a longer shelf-life for the products, which could help in terms of food exports. According to ScanTech, strawberries could last up to three weeks longer with cold pasteurization.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 76 million food illnesses occur annually in the US from exposure to bacteria, a high number partially due to old methods of food treatment - such as methyl bromide treatment - being phased out.

Breast Cancer Treatment in Large, Fewer Doses of Radiotherapy Lessens Side Effects

February 8th, 2010

February 8, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ The Institute of Cancer Research has found that women with breast cancer had more manageable side effects when their radiotherapy was delivered in larger - but fewer - doses.

The study found that women who received the larger doses experienced less skin changes than those subjected to the normal dose. These larger, less-frequent doses also reduce the total amount of radiation delivered over the course of the breast cancer treatment.

Meg McArthur, from the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity, told The Telegraph: “Radiotherapy is important in reducing the chance of cancer coming back but women have told Breakthrough that attending many sessions can be both physically and emotionally draining. Anything that has the potential to deliver radiotherapy treatment in a way that could benefit a patient’s quality of life is to be welcomed.”

Grants Available For Non-Profits To Install Energy Efficient Lighting

February 8th, 2010

Nationwide program assists schools, churches, charities, and other NPOs

February 8, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ — A new nationwide grant program will provide qualifying Non-Profit Organizations with thousands of dollars in cash allowances and services for the purpose of installing new energy efficient lighting systems. The program was created by VistaBright Lighting, a national supplier of energy efficient lighting products (www.vistabright.com). The grants are designed to assist educational institutions (private and public), churches, charitable organizations, community groups, and all other qualifying NPOs in reducing the costs of buying and installing state-of-the-art light fixtures in their facilities before the end of 2010. Using this “green technology” results in a significant reduction in monthly energy costs, which can have a major impact in lowering an organization’s annual expenses.

Old technology lighting is notoriously power hungry. Such systems use metal halide, incandescent or sodium lamps, and are typically found in light fixtures in gyms, auditoriums, factories, warehouses and outdoor lighting applications. Energy usage can be reduced by over 50% by using high efficiency fluorescent or LED lights in new construction projects or in retro-fitting existing facilities. Additional benefits include reduced eye strain, improved visual acuity, and the environment is protected through the reduced consumption of fossil fuels.

The grant program is made possible through the on-going efforts of VistaBright Lighting in organizing the nationwide Energy ALERTSM Alliance, comprised of lighting industry manufacturers, distributors, and electrical contractors. ALERTSM is an acronym for Advanced Lighting Equipment Replacement Technology.

“ALERTSM Grants provide qualifying NPOs with products and services worth thousands of dollars and are scalable to the size of each project” said Craig Pringle, President of the Alliance. Pringle went on to say, “In addition to the cash allowances towards the purchase of fixtures and lamps, the program includes free professional design and consulting services, reduction of installation costs through the ALERTSM electrical contractor network, and possible additional grants directly from Energy ALERTSM Alliance member firms”.

Interested organizations can download grantee qualifications, application instructions, and an application form at the ALERTSM website:

www.energyALERTalliance.com/grants.php

Grants will be issued on a weekly basis, with March 31, 2010 being the application deadline. Applying early will improve an organization’s eligibility for a grant.

Iraq Economic TV and SAK forge Strategic Alliance to launch global campaign

February 5th, 2010

/EIN Presswire/ In a follow up to their recent visit to SAK Commodities’ Baghdad Headquarters, Iraq Economic TV’s Managing Director, Abbas Kamel Al Essawi and Production Editor, Shaamel Abbas Al Essawi returned to SAK to extend a helping hand and offered access to a broader platform. Abbas Kamel Al Essawi invited SAK CEO, R.M.Hultz and Project Director, L. Sowell to review several communications products and formats. Initially Abbas Kamel Al Essawi offered greater access to reporting staff to conduct continual follow up on the progress of SAKs import contracts and future investment projects.

The effort is designed to expose Iraq’s current investment climate through the eyes of an investment group currently on the ground. Abbas Kamel Al Essawi said, “In addition this would provide a platform for Iraq to showcase its talents and abilities to a broader global market and drive a greater demand for the products and services we can offer as a progressive media outlet on a regular basis.”

Production Editor Shaamel Abbas Al Essawi offered to develop a series of commercials, not a new concept in Iraq but definitely a first for a foreign company with an office in Baghdad. The commercial formats would be followed up by a series of brief interviews with company staff. The staff interviews would allow a broadcasting of company progress from various points of view, all tempered to demonstrate the somewhat under reported signs of progress in Iraq.

We at SAK are honored by the outreach extended to us by Iraq EconomicTV and graciously except this sense of volunteerism will not go unrewarded. SAK will reciprocate by rebroadcasting Iraq EconomicTV’s end product and broaden their exposure to global clientele who share a similar need for a modern, progressive media outlet who can broadcast their message
